Violacein producing Janthinobacterium lividum (CCOS 423)

Violacein is a violet indole derivative isolated mainly from pigment producing strains of genera like Janthinobacterium, Collimonas, Duganella, Chromobacterium, Pseudoalteromonas.

It is insoluble in water and soluble in DMSO, methanol and ethyl acetate.

Violacein has shown antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antitumoral activities.

Genes vioA to vioE are responsible for production of violacein and deoxyviolacein. Janthinobacterium lividum strain CCOS 423 produces violacein and was isolated from the skin of the common midwife toad Alytes obstetricans in Switzerland. Violacein producing Janthinobacterium lividum strains protect frogs from chytridiomycosis, a skin disease caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (PMID: 19322245).

Janthinobacterium lividum CCOS 423 produces violet colonies on R2A agar and was deposited by Doug Woodhams and Leyla Rivero Davis (Institute of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies, University of Zurich, Switzerland) and further characterised by the CCOS.
